It was in 2009 that Basia Foundation embarked on a public journey to beat breast cancer. Little did we know what we were getting into.
We started a network and support group in October 2009 for women diagnosed with breast cancer and on October 31st, 2010 we hosted along with First Citizens the first ever Beat Breast Cancer Music Festival in the Caribbean. What an event it was. Despite the successful execution of the event the inclement weather on the day prevented us from achieving our overall objective of attaining a fund for PET/CT scans. In spite of this and other challenges my team and I continued with our commitment to beat breast cancer and expanded our campaign to support women overall in various aspects of their lives. At the beginning of 2011 we launched the ‘Basia for Life’ campaign to support single mothers with children in inner city areas with food and clothing as well as to include awareness for prostate cancer.
This is when we introduced the colour purple to represent for our men.We also took our network to Barbados in January 2011 when we hosted the Caribbean Leading Ladies Conference along with First Citizens. Again thanks to First Citizens we continued to raise funds via merchandising of our Basia Survivor Breast Cancer products at select First Citizens locations. Thanks to First Citizens we were able to meet our weekly and monthly expenses and pay off the majority of our debt.
