| Lymphedema: July 6th |
|
On Tuesday, July 6th, our guest for the afternoon was Nurse Bernice Bacchus. Bernice is not only a nurse at the Brian Lara Center but also a long time cancer survivor – having been originally diagnosed in 2001. Bernice shared with us how she felt on receiving her diagnosis as well as ways in which she has been able to survive for all these years. She emphasized the importance of living and continuing to enjoying life despite the negativity that one may face out there. Our presentation yesterday was done by two young bright budding phsio-therapists, Wynelli Pierre, 2nd yr and Kira Nunes, 3rd yr from the University of the West Indies, Mona Campus, under the guidance of Ms. Lisa Niles who was our main presenter. Ms. Niles is a therapist with many years of experience having worked in Trinidad and Tobago in the Public System both at the Port-of-Spain General Hospital as well as Mount Hope. She is presently attached to the Renew Center. Our presenters not only defined the causes of lymphedema but ways in which it can be avoided. It was stated that early commencement of the right Physio-therapy regime after surgery is critical. They also demonstrated correct exercises that can be done after surgery. The use of compression garments would also assist in preventing the on-set of lymphedema. It is a disease that could be managed once developed but not cured so prevention is key. |
